Who we are
0U8A0193.jpg

Padgett Farm is a family owned beef business. At our farm here in Washington County in Upstate New York, we focus on flavor and quality. Our cattle are given grass and pure local spring water, plus a daily portion of hand fed grain to enhance flavor and just the right amount of marbling in the beef.

We raise mostly Angus stock as this type of beef has long been renowned for its high quality eating experience: flavorful, tender and lean. The quality of the meat is due not only to the aging of the beef for 14 to 21 days before processing, but also an inherent genetic predisposition for tenderness.

Our Natural Beef

We treat our cattle humanely and ensure that they have a comfortable life with us. Our cattle are free of hormones, steroids and antibiotics. They spend twenty four hours per day ranging the open grasslands and woods of our farm.  Hand feeding enables us to interact every evening with the animals, and also allows us to check their health and condition up close every single day.

We believe that when cows are permitted to live in their natural habitat -- wandering around on open pastures, they are healthier. For thousands of years, both wild and domesticated cattle would meander into late season grass fields that had gone to seed and eat the standing hay along with the seed heads, also known as grain.

Someone even wrote a poem about it.

Little Boy Blue,

Come blow your horn,

The sheep’s in the meadow,

The cow’s in the corn. . .

Remember that corn, wheat, oats and rye are all grasses that have gone to seed.  It is natural for cattle to eat this way, as they have always consumed these grains as part of a healthy complex diet of forages.  Our natural beef is produced in this time honored and healthy tradition -- they meander around eating grass and drinking spring water from our ponds as they see fit, and we top it off with a daily serving of grain.

When we say natural, we mean truly natural.  Here is our definition:

No Hormones, No Steroids and No Antibiotics -- Our cattle are never given any form of hormones, steroids, implants or growth stimulants.  We allow our animals to mature slowly for optimal tenderness and marbling.  Our cattle are never given any form of antibiotics.  We do not use antibiotics in feed supplements and we do not administer antibiotics therapeutically.

Vegetarian Diet -- Our cattle are raised on a strictly vegetarian diet.  They are fed only natural feed and rations, such as pasture grass, hay, grains and legumes, and then finished on a corn-based diet for true corn-fed flavor.

Taste -- Because taste is everything, our cattle are mostly Angus with some Hereford or Shorthorn crossing.  These breeds are known for superior marbling, juiciness, tenderness, flavor and consistent portion sizing.

Aging -- All of our steaks are aged for a minimum of 14 to 21 days to intensify the natural beef flavor and create incredible tenderness like that found in the finest steakhouses.

Humanely Treated -- This means that our cattle are treated well, given shelter and sufficient space, and allowed to engage in natural behaviors.
